Typical of the outstanding designs of Fred Lowen and Fler, I believe this suite dates to the very-late 1950’s. I’m pretty sure this is part of the Norsk range which came out after the SC55 and before the popular Fler Narvik range (released in 1961). Whilst the Narvik design is highly-acclaimed, this design with its sculpted teak frame is visually less imposing, giving it a much more streamlined, Nordic look.
The stand-out feature here is the beautifully sculptured wood frame- these frames are stylish, with stunning atomic surfboard shaped arms (similar to the SC55 models).
This pair also boasts superior construction qualities, with a metal substructure that has well and truly lasted the test of time. This metal structure means that this pair is much stronger than the FLER Narvik.
Adding to this, is the practicality of loose seat cushions sitting on the frame- this allows the seat covers to be easily removed for washing. The seat cushions are also reversible which means they can also be flipped over if ever needed. The stunning timber armrests are also super practical- no grubby armrests to ever contend with here and should you decide to reupholster this suite down the track, upholstery costs for suites like this is minimal.
The olive-green boucle type covers are ORIGINAL and in very good condition for the age. This upholstery is extremely hard-wearing- for a suite that’s approximately 65 years old, the durability of the fabric is obvious. The cushioning is also original and in great condition, which also testifies to the quality of the materials they used in this bygone era.
The seat springs are superb. Webbing is usually used in virtually all chairs these days, which is nowhere near as durable- webbing has a tendency to sag / stretch over time and needs to be regularly updated. These metal springs are still perfectly firm with the perfect amount of “give” for sublime comfort- another testament to the quality of what’s on offer. With normal use these springs will last several generations (and already have!).
Much of these timber frames have been shaped by HAND. This is where the value of these pieces lie. You’ll see very few modern lounges with beautifully sculpted frames- there’s too much work in them. Sculptured frames need hand-eye coordination which equals more human-hours and more cost. Vintage pieces like this have increased in value over time because they have inherent value- if furniture like this is looked after, the value of something like this can never be lost. Similar vintage lounge chairs are currently selling for $2200 THE PAIR re-upholstered (and more in some shops). There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
