Background Info and Provenance
(Written in 2022).
A very rare set of Princess White Wine glasses. This size is one of the larger ones in the Princess range and are highly sought-after. (But please note- they are still small for wine glasses.) The Princess design was created in 1957 for Kastrup Holmegaard by Bent Severin and is perhaps the most famous and iconic of all Danish drinking glasses. In my eyes it is the most stunning wine glass ever made and I’ve seen a lot of design over the years! Whilst simple, the stylish shape and bubbled stem is truly inspiring. I’ve got several Princess glasses in my permanent collection. (I also have the largest size but actually prefer these slightly smaller ones. The smaller size seems to complement the design better.) Princess glasses have been in non-stop production between 1958 and 1984 and are often highly prized by their owners so they rarely enter the secondary market. In Australia they’re very hard to come by. I’ve seen single Holmegaard Princess glasses sell on-line for upwards of AU $70 EACH.
These glasses are occasionally inscribed with HG and a single digit but not often. (HG stands for Holmegaard and the single digit is the year of production in the 1970’s.) The ones I currently have on offer do NOT have the inscription but I’ve handled many of these glasses and also have inscribed ones in my own collection- everything is identical and the crystal is the same in clarity. The weights vary from 112g to 158g- every glass is different in weight which proves they’re hand-made (the heights however are all basically identical). All Holmegaard glass (Princess glasses included) is hand-made. I’ve sold the white wine glasses in the past (for one set of 8, I had only one glass with the inscription).
I must also say before ending this lonnng description that these are classified by Holmegaard as white wine glasses but they are small for white wine glasses. They are about half the size of a standard wine glass (most are about 100-105mls in capacity). I’ve come to prefer this size- your white wine is always colder and the slightly smaller glass is not as heavy as the claret and water goblets so they feel much nicer to use. The lighter weight complements the sleek stylish design. Because they are around 100ml in capacity it is also very easy to keep track of how many standard drinks you’re having.
These have some age to them- they’re at least 38 years old (in 2022). Princess glasses are as popular as they’ve ever has been. There is no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

These are in excellent condition for vintage wine glasses. They may have a couple of the tiniest signs of use but nothing that's noticed. They’ve been very well looked after. None of the ones on offer are inscribed- I may have some in my personal collection that are inscribed, ask if this is important to you. Each of these glasses are HAND-MADE (incredible workmanship!) therefore they all vary slightly in size, weight and capacity (however they are all very close to 14cm in height). (To the naked eye they are all the same height). The capacity of each glass is about 100mls (a standard restaurant serving of wine is 150ml). THESE ARE SMALL FOR WINE GLASSES. Weights of each glass vary from 112 grams to 158 grams though most are around 120. A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
