LISTING PRICE IS FOR BOTH CHAIRS!
A PAIR of early-1950’s easy chairs made between 1948 and 1953- love these! It’s amazing that something so distinctly 1950’s can also look timeless, modern and edgy. But this is the thing- timeless design doesn’t pay homage to trends- it stands apart and is always in trend. I can picture this pair in a cool warehouse conversion, modern apartment, mid-century bungalow or an architecturally designed home. After 18-years of trading I’ve never seen this design and have only stocked about 3 cool pairs of 1950’s in the last decade- you certainly won’t be seeing this pair in anyone else’s lounge room.
These chairs have Marsden Campbell on the labels. I’m pretty sure Marsden Campbell was the maker of the cushioning- not the designer or maker of the chairs. The maker / designer at this stage is unknown (but Australian because the cushioning used was a Sydney company).
These are an AUSTRALIAN design- not well-known but that makes them all the more special in my eyes. Replicas have been made of the iconic R160 Featherston chair – I can’t see this design ever being copied. I like these just as much as the Featherston Space Contour chair- a pair of those will set you back at least $3600. (Written in 2019.)
Durability also gets a big tick- look at these chairs after almost 70 years of use- the construction quality is brilliant. And they’re fully ORIGINAL! That’s the big thing I like about this pair- it’s obvious they’re all original (look at that vinyl on the outside with the snake-skin texture). All of them look brilliant after all these years. You want something with character that tell a story? These could be the ones. I love the architectural slant- notice how the sides are not flat but faceted? Very cool and not often seen in furniture.
Comfort also gets a big tick- there’s a nice amount of plushness and great angles- perfect for a good book.
Out of the 1189 second-hand furniture pieces we’ve sold over the last 17 years, we’d sell 1168 of these for A HIGHER PRICE today or for at least the same as we first sold them. Investing in vintage furniture is a wise move financially but more importantly for our environment. When chairs look like this after about 70 years of use, you’re guaranteed they’ve been built to last. And if this design was put on the floor of any furniture design store today they’d still look the part, so you’re assured they will be as cool in the future as they’ve always been. A rare piece of furniture history. PRICE IS FOR BOTH CHAIRS!
