A pair of Asian / Oriental bedside cabinets I believe to be Korean and from the 1950’s (they are definitely vintage anyway). I purchased these for myself but have changed my plans so am now reluctantly selling them. What I love so much about these is the practicality- these are really lightweight but of very solid construction. There’s nothing like this on the market that I can see in Australia. I’ve seen a vintage pair being sold in America for almost AU $5,500 the pair! I completely understand the value- they have a fascinating style and history, offer heaps of storage and there’s no shitty Parker chipboard in the construction here! These are timber.
The $5,500 pair on 1stdibs are identified as being 1950’s and Korean. I see no reason to dispute this. This pair have a lot of age to them- they show many years of use (but no abuse). I like the authentic rustic look and vintage character- there’s also a nice balance of ornateness with a clean, tidy style.
These would look amazing on each side of the bed but if your bedroom shape ever changes I’m sure you’d nearly always get both into any bedroom- one could even act as a TV stand. They’re a really practical size- not too deep and with heaps of storage. I also like how the inside has no compartments (they have not been built-in). This means you can deck it out in any way that suits you and not ever be restricted. (I’d put a few plastic tubs in there to divide up my stuff.)
People might be surprised to see something like this in iNVISeDGE as it may not appear to be my style. The Parker-type bedsides from the 1960’s are starting to bore me and the quality is simply not there. I like anything that’s well-built with character and design flair. These tick all the boxes, especially investment-appeal! They couldn’t even be made for this price but are authentic vintage cabinets that have already proven themselves for about 70 years.
After laminate and chipboard storage pieces from Fantastic Furniture and the likes have ended up as landfill (is it really that FANTASTIC???) these 70-year-old vintage storage chests will be passed on to yet another owner. With sensible use I see no reason why they won’t last another 70 years … or more. When you invest in quality vintage furniture there’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint!
