Description
THIS LISTING PRICE IS FOR 2 CHAIRS IN NATURAL FULL-GRAIN LEATHER ONLY. THE BLACK PAIR CAME OUT OF THE SAME HOME BUT ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING. (I HAD THE BLACK ONES DYED BY A PROFESSIONAL- THEY WERE ALSO IN NATURAL UNTREATED LEATHER WHEN THEY CAME IN.)
THE PAIR IN NATURAL LEATHER SOLD FOR $2350 THROUGH iNVISeDGE BACK IN 2016. THEY SOLD IN 6 DAYS! Today in 2018 I’d price the matching pair at more. These are the only matching pair of 2ND-HAND ones in this design that I’ve seen in 17 years in this business. Yes this pair is 2ND HAND- I was told they were about 30 years old when I bought them. (This design has been altered over the years.) This pair were in FULL-GRAIN leather- incredibly thick and hard-wearing leather. This is obvious when you consider that these are about 30 years old.

Provenance and Background Information
(Written in 2016).
A matching PAIR of exceptional quality leather feature chairs by highly-awarded company, Pacific Green. Pacific Green is at the top in my eyes- they offer it all and have their own original style others wouldn’t even try to copy. This is the Havana design and it’s been in production at least 20 years I’m aware of but more recently has been modified to become a rocking chair which is still made today.
The Pacific Green items I’ve stocked over the years have all drawn immediate interest from international buyers in the UK, USA and Canada. One of these parties communicated with me for over a month trying to make arrangements for shipping. (Note to international buyers- shipping of this piece will cost around AU$1300 (approx US$980) and will take more than 3 months.)
This design is certainly out-there but the earthiness grounds it. Most designer items today are clinical and sterile-looking- this one has an earthy tribal feel with a modern designer edge. I love the luxurious comfort- these are like sitting in an oversized baseball glove! … And those armrests are perfect for resting your snack and drink on!
This chair is heavy and extremely well built- the whole sub-structure is solid metal (I think it’s steel). The photos should be enough for anyone to know it’s very comfortable- its oversized so you can find many comfortable positions and the angles of the seat and back are perfect for curling up in with a good book. And this pair is a great investment- Pacific Green lounge chairs cost about AU $3000 NEW. I didn’t write down prices when I visited their showroom in Castle Hill, Sydney- I was too awe-struck (but $3000 EACH would be about right).
Pacific Green is not as obscure as I first imagined. The business originated from the Post & Rail brand which started in Sydney in the 1970’s. I’ve stocked Post & Rail furniture before and would stock the right designs again (the quality of P & R is exceptional). Post & Rail grew into an international brand and in the late 1980’s they did the unthinkable. With a highly successful brand they changed tack completely. With the world’s new concern with deforestation and ecological threats, Post & Rail closed and re-branded as Pacific Green. Pacific Green searched the world for a sustainable quality timber for their future furniture production- the solution? Coconut wood. In the South Pacific, they found vast abandoned plantations of coconut palm trees, which were commercially planted in the early-1900s but had reached the end of productive fruiting. The best part? Coconut wood is more resilient than virtually any timber. It thrives in areas battered by tropical cyclones.
After I’d found out that I not only did I wanted that suite in a second, I wanted to start stocking new Pacific Green furniture in iNVISeDGE (which would be a first for us because we only sell used furniture). But there’s more. Pacific Green set a benchmark for modern, sustainable business in the Pacific. In the late 1980’s land was leased, not bought, to respect indigenous ownership. Their factory was built in consultation with the surrounding villages and employed only local people. Business and skills training programmes were established. The majority of the business is owned by Fijians- the drive is still Australian- the designing arm happens here in Australia.
Pacific Green today has grown from that little furniture-making firm that started in the Rocks, Sydney back in 1973 (as Post & Rail). I am inspired and heartened they changed tack back in the late 1980’s when ecological threats were barely thought of. I can write nothing critical about this pair of chairs or Pacific Green- if I wasn’t busy with iNVISeDGE I’d want a job with them.
The best thing about Pacific Green is the inspiration it evokes- PG ticks every box and proves that businesses can be successful, ecologically responsible and socially aware. These chairs have been built to last and will continue to tell stories for generations to come- just like Post & Rail furniture has already done. Pacific Green Furniture WILL become the antiques of tomorrow. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill (and your carbon footprint).
