Provenance and Background Info

A pair of armchairs by Poltrona Frau. Poltrona Frau is a high-end Italian manufacturer stocked by SPACE Furniture a few years back. It belongs to the same stable as Cassina- Poltrona Frau own Cassina and Cappellini- these two companies fall under the Poltrona Frau umbrella. Poltrona Frau ranks up there with B & B Italia and Poliform. This is vintage Poltrona Frau from the 1970’s. A friend who is learning photography with iNVISeDGE was surprised to hear these are 70’s chairs, he thought they were modern. That’s what I love about this suite. I realised it was 1970’s or early 80’s the second I came across it but the design is so classic you could put it on the floor of SPACE Furniture today and it would still hold its own.

Because it’s 1970’s and was never stocked in Australia you won’t find this suite again. It was bought across to Australia by the Yugoslav embassy in the early 1980’s. They changed premises from South Yarra, Melbourne in the 1990’s which was when it was acquired by the owner I got it from. That company did corporate counselling so these chairs (listing is for the PAIR OF CHAIRS ONLY) were sat in for hours in a corporate situation. This company consolidated their offices to one Sydney office about 10 years back and instead of keeping their Sydney suite they chose to have this Poltrona Frau suite freighted up from Melbourne.

I can see why they kept it. I come across a lot of furniture in this job and this suite stood apart immediately. The comfort is exceptional. The quality is exceptional. The quality of the leather is exceptional. Many NEW leathers are not the same. A lot of leather these days but a lot of it disintegrates in years. This obviously won’t and proof of that is in the condition of this suite after about 40 years of use. Being Poltrona Frau, all the pieces are heavy, rock-solid and strong. With normal use this suite will last another lifetime or more.

The beauty of owning vintage items is that you won’t see the same item around everywhere but beyond that you have irrefutable proof of the quality you’re getting. I cleaned this up a bit and that’s it. If you ever need a change in the future, approach me, I’d be happy to represent this pair of chairs again. Vintage furniture that stands apart in terms of both durability and design is one of the best financial furniture investments you can make for your home but above all is the best way you can reduce landfill and help the future of our environment.

As the photos show, BOTH CHAIRS are in exceptional condition. They’re about 10 years old but present extremely well for furniture of this age. Virtually nothing could ever happen to the structure of these chairs. The inner construction is metal so is strong, sturdy and heavy with NO movement or wobbles in any joint, NO breaks, NO repairs, nothing of that sort. _____ The leather is top-quality and shows virtually NO signs of use. No guessing the quality of leather here. After 10 years the leather on both chairs presents in exceptional condition. I avoid the word “new” as much as possible because I only deal in pre-loved furniture but in this case both chairs present as if they came off the showroom floor (very close to new). This is top-quality 100% REAL leather- I think the leather has another 50 years use left in it as is if it’s looked after. _____ Working with leather in these shapes presents a myriad of challenges for designers. The leather must have some give to stand up to use over time- if the leather is rigid in areas where there are curves and movement when the chairs get sat on, the leather will crack over time. Patricia Urquiola has overcome this challenge by using Velcro up under the seat section to secure the leather but also give it some flexibility- Velcro has also been used under the chair to secure the upholstery (around the full circumference). _____ _____ Measurements- 67cm across. Depth- about 67 cm. Height- 71cm. Seat height- 44cm. Depth of seat- 53cm. For FREIGHT- 0.32 cbm. Pair- 0.64 cbm.
