Background Info and Provenance

A VINTAGE PAIR of cane pretzel armchairs. This type of design is extremely popular and getting VERY hard to get these days (particularly the AUTHENTIC ART DECO productions- which these are). The rounded arms and arcs make a bold statement that has an art deco slant. This particular production marries design flair with a refined sophisticated style. There are plenty of boxes and harsh edges in our urban environments- there’s something very calming about bringing circles and arcs into living spaces. Curves also bring a bit of magic inside your home- curves in HAND-CRAFTED furniture always hold an intrinsic element of intrigue because they are so hard to produce out of natural materials.

The 5-strand variety is the hardest to get out of any art deco rattan suite. They are commanding hefty prices worldwide. At this price, you’re getting an astute investment. These suites have increased markedly in value over the 20 years I’ve been in this business- I can’t see this particular suite losing any value while you get to enjoy using it in your home. In fact, I can only see this VINTAGE suite increasing in value over the years. Similar chairs in America are commanding around AU $10,000 the pair. This is the first pair in the 5-strand variety that we’ve had in about 2 years (and we only got these because we’re working with them under consignment- no other reason- they’re just too hard to get anymore).

Rattan is DURABLE and environmentally sustainable. (Once cut bamboo grows back very quickly in the right climates.) These frames will last generations (and they already have!). Rattan will also rarely get bumps and dents. To top it off, this design has good seating comfort. The back is set at an excellent angle for comfort. The seat is slanted back slightly so that the chair itself is holding you in proper seating position and you’re not holding yourself up.

These are also loose cushions sitting on these frames. The cushions can be flipped over if one side gets dirty PLUS the covers can be unzipped and machine-washed at any time (on the gentle cycle or handwashed- just put the covers back on whilst still damp to prevent shrinkage). Re-upholstery is the cheapest possible upholstery job- just take your fabric with the old covers to anyone with a sewing machine. It’s not difficult or costly. This pair can have a whole new look for around $350. Chairs like this are perfect in an Airbnb place or if you have young children.

The beauty of investing in vintage design is knowing how the item will stand up to use before you shell out a cent. Look at these art deco beauties after about 70 years of use! An item like this is the epitome of a solid investment because the design is practical, very DURABLE and timeless in looks. There’s no better financial investment for your home and no better way to reduce landfill- this suite will continue to tell stories long after you and I have gone!

This pair is in brilliant VINTAGE condition. They're over 60 years old- sturdy, strong, solid and durable. The frames have NO structural issues at all. All joints are solid and strong- they're both sturdy chairs. There are a couple of areas where the joints have been reinforced with several screws. There is no movement in these areas and this does not affect the function of the chairs at all. The screws have split one length of rattan (as shown in one of the close-up photos)- this does not affect the chairs at all. These screws are very aged which means they were added long ago and are doing what they are meant to do (ie. provide additional support to those joints). One chair has new cushioning. This cushioning is very firm. The other retains the original cushions. There is more plushness to the original cushions. There are a couple of very minor marks to the covers (if you want to be a nit-picker) but they present very well- some sides show nothing. The covers look close to new and are less than 2 years old. There are no unsightly signs of use or damage at all. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Cosmetically the frames are in excellent condition. These chairs have been professionally refinished just recently- this is a very time-intensive exercise and costly to get done. The rattan has a great tone and the condition of the finish is amazing.
