Description
The description below was written in 2011. I sold this pair for $495 the pair through iNVISeDGE back in 2011. Fool! These are a genuine Featherston design known as the TY chair that was released in 1957. My research skills were obviously not as good back then! I’d price this exact same pair for $840-$950 these days.
Provenance and Background Info
(This pair SOLD in 2011.)
This part of this description was written in 2011 … A pair of 1950’s wingback feature chairs. These are authentic vintage chairs displaying a superior level of quality and design. I’ve seen these identified as a Grant Featherston design- I’m not sure if this is true. The manufacturer was Bendix in the 1950’s but who designed them is a mystery to me. They’re a fantastic design- distinctly 50’s but they’d also look great in a modern space. I love the shape of the back and the sweeping lines in the leg section. They’re reminiscent of the highly acclaimed Scape Lounge Chair by Grant Featherston which is included in the Powerhouse Museum. Scape Lounge Chairs fetch something like $4000 each. This is a more affordable option of the same age and style. They’re not easy to find- in the 10 years I’ve been in this business I’ve occasionally seen these chairs in Melbourne but this is the first pair I’ve ever stocked.
This pair ticks all the boxes- stunning form, BRILLIANT COMFORT, unique styling and durable construction. They have been used for around 60 years- this is your proof that these chairs were built to last. This is why people are turning back to vintage furniture. If chairs look like this after 60 years, it’s almost a certainty you’ll get as many years use out of them as you want. And to top it off these chairs have solid re-sale value too- they’ve increased in value over the last 20 or so years- I see no reason why owners of TY chairs won’t continue to see steady gains with the value of their chairs. There really is no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
