Background Info and Provenance

(This description was written in 2020.)

A LARGE Perspex camel by famous Brazilian inventor and artist, Abraham Palatnik. The small cat shown in the first photo is not included in the price and shown to help gauge size. The cat is 10cm in height which is the most common size for Palatnik creatures. As you can see the camel is very big by comparison. (It’s one of the largest Palatnik creatures I’ve ever come across).

The camel is very rare. I’ve been collecting Palatnik creatures for about 15 years now (written- 2020). This is the only camel I’ve ever seen for sale in Australia. (I got this one through a friend who lives in the US.) I sold a Palatnik cat just recently and it has become one of my most popular decorative arts listings ever. Palatnik creatures are amazing pieces of art and much-loved the world over.

Palatnik invented this concept in the 1960’s and created a swarm of celebrated designs. Known as kinechromatic art, this camel was created by infusing two pieces of acrylic together. On one, the patterning of the piece is screen-printed BY HAND and the other is infused on top; therefore the decoration is contained within the Perspex (as opposed to being painted on the surface). This technique helps make Palatnik’s pieces highly collectable because the decoration can’t be damaged- with normal handling, the piece will look as it does today for decades (probably centuries) to come.

I also read somewhere just recently that Palatnik destroyed the means of making these before he died which means Palatnik creatures are a very smart investment. There’s a finite number of them and they’re hard to get anywhere worldwide. In Australia they’re near impossible to find because they were never retailed here back in the 1950’s and 1960’s (when they were produced). I have a friend in the US which is the only reason I have a collection of Palatnik creatures. This camel is coming out of my own collection. I bought it many years ago- it’s not in perfect condition but still presents very well overall. (Please read our CONDITION & DIMENSIONS section carefully and scrutinise our photos which shows this camel closely all over.) Palatnik camels sell for significantly more than this- you’re lucky this one has MINOR damage because it makes it very affordable… unlike the ones that are currently for sale elsewhere … AU $1400 EACH!!! (See the screenshot included in this listing.)

Palatnik’s sculptures became highly collectable in the “noughties” after high profile interior-designers in America (such as Jonathan Adler) started showcasing them in various interiors. This piece is signed with the distinctive Pal signature which gives it very strong investment appeal.

After most modern home décor has ended up as landfill this piece will still be telling stories, igniting the imagination and inspiring generations to come. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
