Description
These desks are really hard to find, very practical in today’s homes because the proportions are perfect to use as a computer desk in a living room or bedroom, plus they’re simply a stunning piece of design. The listed price INCLUDES the matching Parker chair from the same era! We’ve sold one of these Parker desks on their own for this price- this is an attractive opportunity for the astute investor!
LOCATION- being sold by the Executors Of a Will under consignment in iNVISeDGE- the item is part of a deceased estate in BONDI JUNCTION, Sydney. This desk and chair can be transported Australia-wide for a reasonable fee. It would cost ABOUT $200 to get both pieces to Melbourne or Brisbane.
Background Info and Provenance
(Description written in 2008 but updated in 2024.)
A stylish PARKER FURNITURE hall table/desk (this listing includes the matching chair). In my opinion this is one of the best pieces Parker ever did. The stylish elegance is stunning. It was actually designed to be used in the bedroom with a stool underneath for ladies to apply their make-up. A mirror rested on the back- this was back in the early 1960’s, about 1963, when there must have been so much more time to do things- most women I know just rush the job in the bathroom! I can’t imagine most women (or some men in this day and age) sitting down to apply their make-up. Because these tables were made to be used in this way there are not many around and today are snapped up quickly to be used as hall tables or desks in today’s homes particularly if the piece needs to form part of the living space or bedroom. The proportions are perfect if used in this way.
The design has been done extremely well with the eye for detail that won Parker Furniture wide acclaim in the early 1960’s- this piece was released at the height of their game. You won’t find a more elegant piece of design. Elegant, but also well-built.
These Parker tables hold obvious investment appeal- I’ve seen them sell for much more. This piece is very likely to increase in value along with inflation (at least). Over the last 15 years iNVISeDGE has had only one other of these to sell- they are really hard to get.
Parker Furniture was founded in 1935 by two brothers, Jack and Bruce Parker, in Sydney. Originally the company produced upholstered furniture but later expanded their product line to include mid-century modern designs and became very well-known for their furniture from the late-1950s to the 1970s. In the 1960’s, they were heavily influenced by the Scandinavians – particularly Hans Wegner. Parker Furniture primarily worked in teak sourced from South East Asia.
Over the last 22 years I’ve seen first-hand how these Parker desks / hall tables have increased in value (and very noticeably). They sit at the pinnacle and are regarded as one of the best (if not the best) vintage tables ever released in Australia that could be used as a computer desk. There’s no reason why they won’t continue to appreciate in value over the years. Get a piece of plate-glass cut for the top and you’ll have a lifetime INVESTMENT that should never lose a cent of value.
NOTE- the photo of the Parker Hall Table with the Ellis Thinking Man ornament on top was sold by iNVISeDGE in the past and has been included for display purposes only.
