Background Info and Provenance
If I’d found this suite myself it wouldn’t be going anywhere- I LOVE it! It’s exactly the type of thing I go for and ticks every box. It’s stunning, sophisticated, a bit quirky, comfortable, VERY durable, has very strong investment appeal- plus it’s UNIQUE. That’s right; this is a ONE-OFF lounge suite, designed and produced in Brisbane in the 1970’s for a furniture design competition. And it won first prize! Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have- the rest has been lost between the passing of hands. Oh and of course we know it was made by PEACOCK FURNITURE in West End, Brisbane back in the 70’s. (But that information can’t ever be lost- there are labels attached to every piece and because they’re under the cushions, these labels are all in excellent condition for the age of the suite.)
This suite was made BY HAND back in the days when furniture was made by real people and people had respect for their craft and their customers. That almost sounds like a romantic proposition these days- a long-lost memory of the past that may never become the norm again. I suppose that’s being a bit pessimistic. Since COVID (which I like to call “The Great Global Reset”) I’ve seen a massive resurgence in people wanting to buy locally-made products again and wanting to invest in items built to last. I think it’s possible we may move back to a world where we know the people who make the furniture we sit on, the artists creating our favourite home décor items, the food we buy from the supermarket and our one-and-only local restaurant. (We won’t ever go back to having only one restaurant in our local area (!) but the idea of local people creating and producing all we need is not a far-flung fantasy anymore. Since COVID, I think MOST people are itching to get back to a life that’s real- a life where we know the people we’re choosing to support (because we love and respect their work).
I’ve digressed- sorry! My point is, this suite is special! In 20-years of trading I’ve never come across another one before. In fact, I’ve never seen anything remotely like it. And it HAS been built to last. This suite has obviously seen considerable use because this is second-generation upholstery. The frame is as solid and sturdy as the day it was made (by real craftspeople). I could have probably used the word “craftsmen” and it wouldn’t have been “politically incorrect”. Back in the 1970’s, I don’t imagine there would have been any women working at the PEACOCK FURNITURE factory in downtown Brisbane and yes, Brisbane was little more than a country town back then!
I LOVE clear Perspex furniture- I have about 5 small pieces of Perspex furniture in my collection that I doubt I will ever part with. Perspex is “edgy”, it has a glamorous style with the way light plays along its surfaces- it’s modernist, but also timeless and minimalist. I HATE clutter! (My parents are both hoarders and I’ve always been averse to clutter.) With my furniture, I want it to be “clean and tidy” so that the eye skims over it and sees other focal points created in the space. I want my furniture to be noticed but not take all the focus. This suite fits the bill perfectly. I think the thing I love most about it, is that the upholstery can be changed (very easily at any time because these are essentially loose cushions sitting on a frame) to fit in with any look. In duck-blue velvet on marble floors, this suite would be STUNNING (but still refined, sophisticated and stylish). With a colourful patterned fabric, it’d be the epitome of fun or retro and in the current black upholstery it’s sleek and stylish with a slant of boldness and masculinity. I could even see this piece upholstered in aged cognac-coloured leather. Put it in front of a fireplace with earthy brick-work and timber floors and it would add a fascinating chic-designer edge to the space. I think it’s the most versatile lounge suite I’ve ever come across.
Looks and DURABILITY aside, comfort is also there. This suite holds you in excellent seating position. The back is angled perfectly to take pressure off shoulder and back muscles and the seat has a nice amount of “give” for plushness but also to help facilitate a brilliant seating position. You are supported well in this suite. This does not have sloth all over sponginess (which I personally don’t like in a lounge suite). I can see myself being able to sit comfortably in this suite for anything- conversations, reading a book, even a Netflix marathon (not that I do that much!)
I could keep going on about the pros of this suite but I’ll spare you. Items that have been built to last (and respect the materials used to produce them) are our only way out of this mess. Consider INVESTING in well-built items that will be passed onto the next generation (like we did back in the 1970’s before everything moved offshore). If you believe it’s important for Australia to start producing its own products again, put your money where your mouth is! For furniture, virtually ALL Australian-made options in 2022 are VINTAGE. The beauty of this is that these items also hold VERY STRONG INVESTMENT appeal. I can’t see this Australian-made suite EVER losing any value. If it was made new in Australia again by HAND with the same level of care, attention and quality of materials, it would have a price tag of about AU$10,000 to AU$12,000! This is a no-brainer INVESTMENT that I believe will INCREASE in value in the future as you get to use and enjoy it. Plus, by buying from iNVISeDGE you’re supporting various locally-run, family-owned businesses. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home, reduce landfill and your carbon footprint.
