Provenance / Background Information
An MP-61 chair by Percival Lafer (of Brazil) c. 1973.
Percival Lafer is a pioneer of the Brazilian modernist movement and one of the most innovative and prolific of the Brazilian mid-century furniture designers. He designed and produced everything from stunning furniture to lighting, payphone hoods, newsstands, and even cars, having developed the MP Lafer, a two-seater fibreglass roadster manufactured in the 1970s and 80s. Lafer’s furniture designs are much coveted by savvy collectors. Ironically he didn’t start out in furniture design, but instead began his professional life studying architecture in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Percival Lafer’s designs have always been highly desired (it says something that in the 1960s and 70s he was successfully exporting his furniture to Scandinavia- the producers of iconic designs of the era). Today, Percival Lafer’s furniture is highly collectible and sells for tens of thousands per piece. If you can find one of his pieces (which is in itself a rare moment) you can expect to pay around $20,000 for a chair, and $30,000 for a sofa in good condition. There are very few in Australia and they come up for sale once every matter of years. I cannot find one for sale in Australia at the time of posting.
Percival Lafer’s determination to merge superior craftsmanship and innovation in design is clearly displayed in this chair- the MP-61 model, manufactured in Brazil and released in 1973 (when this piece was made).
The MP-61 model was the first design Percival Lafer released that used fibreglass as a visible component of the design, though in the early suites fibreglass was sometimes sheathed in leather. This material vastly simplified production and produced a more dynamic look. The over-abundant foam padding is applied directly to the fibreglass shell and then draped in high-quality Brazilian leather in a way that resembles a waterfall or a just-blown kiss. The base is made of Brazilian Rosewood veneer over plywood. A beautifully simple and incredibly sturdy cross-brace design in which the fibreglass ‘egg’ nestles like a purring cat. Comfort is king here. Style the queen.
Sizzling with pop-art energy- this striking icon screams of all the juxtapositions of the 1970’s: the MP-61 is simultaneously smooth and textured, organic and man-made, black and white, stark and warm, round and sharp, quirky, elegant- everything all at once; just like the era (if you’re old enough to remember). ;+)
The MP-61 model by Percival Lafer is THE most incredible chair we’ve had to date (in 22 years of trading) and probably the rarest too. If you miss this, it’ll probably be a forever regret. Take a closer look for yourself.
And make no mistake … the MP-61 chair is so ridiculously comfortable too, as the photos plainly show! If you are seriously interested and want to hear about how comfortable it is – and more importantly WHY it’s so comfortable – SMS or call Michael using the phone number in our CONTACT section!
Additional Information about Percival Lafer
After Percival Lafer graduated from the MacKenzie University of Architecture in Sao Paulo, his father suddenly passed away, and in 1961, he and his brothers took over Móveis Lafer, their father’s furniture company. Percival introduced the incredibly popular iron and leather MP-1 chair soon after. He continued to concentrate on affordable, casual, and often madly puffed forms in his designs through the next few decades, distinct from the streamlined designs coming out of Europe and the US. Fascinated by the engineering involved, Percival Lafer developed chairs and sofas that became sought after for their signature low-slung structural hardwood bases and stunningly plush leather upholstery, but most importantly for their supreme comfort, achieved by layers of polyurethane padding. Lafer’s designs were also sought after for their modular features which made them easy to ship and store.
New furniture loses about half of its value the second you buy it and a lot of new furniture exploits the earth and people used to produce it. With this MP-61 chair by Percival Lafer, there’d be no better way I can think of to invest in your home, reduce landfill and your carbon footprint.
