Description
This chair sold through iNVISeDGE for $319 back in 2004. Today in 2019 I’d price the exact same chair at around $890-$1000 but it could be worth more if I ever found a definitive maker for it. This is an incredibly RARE chair!
Provenance and Background Info
Short description written in 2019.
A very cool 1950’s office / desk swivel chair. In 20 years of trading I’ve not come across another like it. I have no idea who made it- I’m certain it’s a 1950’s piece though. The vinyl is distinctive 50’s vinyl used in Australia around 1954-1960. The leg-base looks like the “Cone Chair”- a famous Featherston chair design released in 1955 after his famous contour chairs- the “Cone Chair” was a swivel chair if I remember rightly (and this chair swivels too). I won’t spend time researching it now because this chair sold 20 years ago. If you have any information about this chair I’d be interested to hear from you. It could well be a RARE Featherston design or even a Featherston prototype. I really don’t know- I can only speculate because there are no others around. This iNVISeDGE buyer got a great investment. I actually remember who bought it now that I’m writing this. It went to Melbourne (when I was operating out of Sydney) to a shop-owner who bought a lot from me about 20 years ago. He had to pay freight down to Melbourne so he would have needed to get $800 at least for the chair (back in 2004) to make the whole process worth his while.
Good design supersedes trends because it’s always in trend. And good vintage pieces get an extra tick because if a piece looks like this after 50 years of use you KNOW the quality you’ll be getting (before you pay even a cent). There are no better ways to invest in your home, reduce landfill and support local small Australian businesses.
