Background Information and Provenance

(Written in 2021)

The SC55 Rocket chair is RARE and highly sought after- this is only the third pair iNVISeDGE has stocked in about 23 years of trading. This design has significantly grown in value over the last 25 years and there’s no reason why this won’t continue. This is one of Fred Lowen’s most coveted designs and is featured in the Powerhouse Museum collection. Lowen created award-winning designs in the 1950’s (such as this), then continued through the 1960’s with designs such as the ever-popular FLER Narvik and Norsk ranges. Following this, he set up Twen and then Tessa in the 1970s where he made some of his most successful designs ever.

As mentioned previously, The Powerhouse Museum bought this design for their collection and rightly so- I saw these on show the first time I visited the Powerhouse in Sydney. There have been many other museums, exhibitions and TV shows where FLER SC55s have been used- just look at the photos- there’s no question they’re a stand-out piece of design.

This pair is also a very strong investment- they should never lose any value- try getting that from new furniture! Today, in 2024 as I update this description I’m going build upon what I wrote in this paragraph back in 2020. This design gets ALL ticks. A tick for durability- just look at them after 70 years of use. A tick for the stunning, but TIMELESS styling- a classic piece of design from 1955, but just as beautiful today in 2024- you’d be hard-pressed to find any furniture that’s more timeless. I think what makes them so timeless is the combination of earthiness and warmth, with a stylish, aerodynamic design. A big tick for comfort- PERFECT angles for seating comfort PLUS a high back to support all your back and shoulders. Because the design gets such resounding ticks in every category, the investment appeal is no surprise. I’ve seen first-hand how the value of these chairs climbs with inflation and there’s no reason why this won’t continue. The chairs have inherent value- the design is genius.

The construction quality is unheard of today, with a solid wrought iron / metal frame- the timber is clad onto a metal support. The arms have been designed like surfboards (some call them paddles) and are an outstanding design feature (and supported underneath by a metal sub-structure). These chairs were originally sold at a time when post-war optimism was high, and each purchase was accompanied by a LIFETIME guarantee on the construction of the frame (I think you’d be hard-pressed to find that in any of today’s furniture!).

These chairs have been given a new lease of life with new WARWICK upholstery by a professional upholsterer (who has done the job with precision and skill). The fabric choice is perfect in my eyes- light in tone and the opposite of bold, the upholstery allows the shape of the timber frame and its earthiness to take all the focus. The fabric nestles into the background as it should.

Investing in RARE iconic furniture that has stood the test of time is a smart way to go. These chairs are about 70 years old and look at them! There’s no better way we can think of to invest in your home, reduce landfill and show your support of local SMALL business..

This pair of chairs from the mid-1950's have just been restored so present extremely well. There are no condition issues that warrant a mention. Use our Zoom-in tool to clearly see what's on offer. Both chairs have lasted about 70 years- there's no reason why they won't last another 70! The structure is genius and has endured many years of use- they are still comfortable and completely sturdy. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ There are NO breaks; there's NO movement in any joint, NO cracks around any joint area, NO repairs. The cushioning is completely plush and comfortable. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements of the PREVIOUS SC55 single-seater chairs we had. Contact us if you need the dimensions of this pair confirmed. Across- 65cm by about 72cm back with a height of 89cm (nice and high for an armchair). The seat height was 45cm and the front of the armrest was 59cm in height. This pair should have very similar dimensions.
