Background Info and Provenance

A HAND-MADE iridescent vase engraved Robert Wynne ‘89” to the base. This is a historically significant piece because it’s one of the first pieces Wynne ever made. It came before he started signing his pieces Denizen (which was 1990 and before he opened the ‘Denizen’ glass studio in Manly, Sydney the next year). Wynne is considered an Australian pioneer of studio art glass and his pieces are represented in Australia and internationally (including the collections of President Bill Clinton, Sir Elton John and the Royal Family of Japan). I’ve seen several Wynne pieces on ebay in America priced at AU$2000. I’ve also seen a piece of his earlier work bid up to about $2000 at Shapiros auctions a few years back. The piece on offer in this listing is up there with those as far as artist merit is concerned.

It’s part of the “Terrain” series and evokes the energy of the earth’s seismic activity. There’s a simmering energy to this piece which mirrors the largely unseen energy beneath us creating different terrains on earth. The result of seismic activity on earth is bold and striking and so too is this vase.

This piece is a great investment and worth a lot more right now (and I think it will only get more valuable as the years roll on). It has just as much “wow-factor” as most Loetz, Tiffany, Charles Lotton and Colin Heaney pieces. Tiffany pieces of this size fetch up to $6000. Lotton pieces around 24cm in height fetch about $2200. Robert Wynne has a proven track record for pushing boundaries and over the years his work has constantly evolved. In the 15 years I’ve been in this business I’ve seen only 1 or 2 other pieces like this. At the time of writing one has an auction estimate of $600 – $800 (the commission fees would be on top of this).

The work of other artists such as Colin Heaney didn’t evolve as much. Google, “Robert Wynne – Raven” and you’ll be inspired. If you dig into Wynne for a bit you’ll see that he’s constantly mixing it up and growing as an artist.

It’s incredible that this would have been one of Wynne’s earliest pieces, made in the lead-up to opening his first gallery. This piece shows a flow and essence that only epitomizes why he has gone on to become one of Australia’s most respected artists. This is not just my opinion. Wynne recently won the coveted Kirra Galleries National Illuminating Glass Award with a $15,000 prize attached for his piece, “Raven’s Clutch”. He was also named in the Valiant Glass’ Top 10 Australian Glass Artists when this list was compiled.

Google, Robert Wynne glass and if you dig a little you’ll see some amazing pieces of work. This hand-made piece of art will be passed from one generation to the next. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint. And additionally when you buy hand-made art you’re supporting an industry where décor items come from the hands and hearts of artists (people) and not machines.
