Background Info and Provenance

A RARE SET OF 3 Italian art-glass pieces made BY HAND in the Murano region- each vase has two original labels to guarantee that these are authentic MURANO art-glass pieces. These labels also verify that the pieces were made about 25 years ago. The Vetri Murano label on each GUARANTEES to the customer that these vases were made using traditional artistic methods born and developed over a thousand years in the island of Murano. Only companies producing artistic glass on the island of Murano can apply for the Vetri trademark- if granted, they become a concessionary company and are given labels (that they use alongside their own maker’s labels) to guarantee the quality and HAND-MADE craftsmanship of their art. It’s a sorry state of the world that in the late-1980’s these artisans had to band together to protect their work because there was nothing stopping Chinese companies putting a “Murano” label on inferior art made by machines and then selling it for a fraction of the price. (The Murano artisan industry nearly died as a result).

These 3 vases would retail new today in Murano, Italy for around AU $2500 for the set and the labels authenticate this statement. This is a conservative estimate- I’d say it would be closer to AU $3000. (This production is not new though- these are about 25 years old- the Vetri Murano labels changed about 20 years ago.) Countless hours have gone into HAND-creating and producing this design. The facets are all hand-cut- the craftsmanship is astounding and proof of why the Murano region in Italy has lead the world in the creation of HAND-CRAFTED art-glass for hundreds of years and still do. The price I have on these is a bargain for work of this quality and esteem.

These were NOT produced by simply pouring glass into a mould- they have had each face cut in this way to create the crispness on each edge. The set is cubist and geometric- it looks like they could belong on the finger of a lady (or drag queen)- would be a tad bulky though!

This design is hard to get in Australia and I’ve sold only one other in 17 years of trading- they’re heavy which means they’re expensive to send internationally limiting the probability of ever finding the bigger ones (and particularly a full set) in Australia.

Art glass pieces done by hand with such a high level of skill are collectable. Good art is never trendy but instead only becomes more prized with each set of hands it passes between. The Mandruzzato company first created this design back in 1950’s and has continued this design for about 4 decades ensuring it will go down in history as one of the greats. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
