Background Info and Provenance
A VINTAGE Kosta vase engraved to the base (Kosta SS 5333) by Mona Morales-Schildt. SS is the Kosta designer code for Mona Morales-Schildt cut glass/crystal pieces. This piece was designed in the late 1950’s. It forms part of the Ventana series (window in Italian) which she is best known for.
This is a rare piece of history by a highly esteemed artist and there’s something about vintage Kosta (Boda) I can’t go past. The piece itself is intriguing. Two faces have been cut so they’re flat but rounded. Morales-Schildt designs are quite restrained and seemingly simple but there’s a complexity in the way light refracts within the crystal and on the surfaces of the piece. The complex refraction becomes the ornateness of the design and the design itself has to be simple for best effect.
This is a stand-alone piece- it doesn’t need anything around it to prop it up. Because of this, the complexity of the work involved and the fact it’s a 1950’s Kosta Boda piece, it fetches more than a lot of mid-century glass.
In Australia, this should be worth more. I have never seen one on offer in Australia and I visit the mid-century design shops in Sydney when I’m there.
It is signed AND also retains the Kosta vinyl label. This gives the piece unprecedented investment appeal for a piece in this series. It’s size is also rare- this is one of the largest Ventana pieces I’ve ever come across.
The work of Mona Morales-Schildt is highly regarded and I believe will only continue to increase in value as you get to enjoy the piece. I’ve seen pieces in the Ventana series priced at $1420- this vouches for the collectibility of her work. This piece is one to be passed from one generation to the next. Instead of adding to global pollution consider buying hand-made vintage pieces- there are very few better ways you can invest in your home and reduce landfill.

This vintage piece is in excellent condition for its age with no noticeable damage to report. NO cracks, NO chips, NO repairs. The piece has about 10 short shallow scratches over the surface from the last 50-odd years (about 2-3 on each of the 4 sides). These are minor and because of the intense refraction occurring in the piece they’re not noticed when the piece is on display. If you inspect the surface closely you may notice some of them (but you’d probably have to pick the piece up first). This item has a height of about 20cm and measures about 12.5cm across at its widest. It weighs a hefty 2.3 kg! Read my 1100+ ebay feedback comments (ALL for vintage design SALES). This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth.
