Provenance and Background Info
A set of SIX Parker Spadeback dining chairs from around 1961-1964. This is the most sought-after VINTAGE TEAK dining chair design in this country and has been for some time. I often get asked when I am going to stock another set of chairs in this design. I’ve seen them for $675 A CHAIR ($4000 for six) at a couple vintage stores in Melbourne.
They tick every box. They’re well-made. Structurally this design fares extremely well over the years. I can’t remember ever seeing any in this design broken. This is because it’s very hard for guests (or teenagers!) to lean back on two legs. The angles, particularly the angle of the seat makes it hard to do this. Also the internal joinery in Parker chairs is incredible- this set of six are all structurally solid and sturdy after over 50 years of use. These chairs are also extremely comfortable for a dining chair- the back is curved and cradles your back (some Danish-style chairs- eg. the FLER 64 dining chair are uncomfortable and are awful on your back- not these). I never stock FLER 64 chairs for that reason even though they’re a beautiful design. I figure that if you’re going to invest over $2000 in dining chairs you might as well get the best- why compromise on comfort when this Parker design looks just as beautiful as all the others in this style? These chairs also match in with many vintage tables. (TABLES SHOWN IN THIS LISTING ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE). If you decide later to extend your suite it’s possible to find more chairs in this design to match because they’re an Australian production.
This is one of Parker’s best designs and is largely responsible for the reputation Parker still enjoy. (Parker went out of business in the 1990’s after a 40-year stint in the Australian furniture marketplace. They came back with re-issues of their best vintage designs in 2006 (stocked by David Jones- the re-issues were very expensive). To my knowledge this design was NEVER re-issued.) This design is bold and confident- the curves and refined tapering offer a captivating contrast.
This vintage Parker design has steadily increased in value over the last 18 years I’ve been in this business. I remember selling a set of four in this exact design for $125 each back in 2003! By 2006 they easily fetched $275 PER chair. They have continued to increase in value ever since- people are always wanting them. They’re the epitome of timeless design. I see no reason why values of this design won’t continue to rise along with inflation at least forever. These are at the pinnacle of Australian furniture offerings- there are not many around because people hold tightly onto theirs these days because they’re such great chairs.
After most modern offerings have ended up as landfill, this early-1960’s set will be passed onto yet another generation. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
