Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2021).

A stunning art glass piece HAND-CRAFTED by one of Australia’s most eminent art-glass artists, Tina Cooper. This is a favourite of mine. I love its wispy ethereal essence. The colours are vibrant but have a muted quality because of the frosted glass. Coupled with its free-flowing shape, this one is brimming with life but strangely restrained and understated at the same time. You really get lost in the motion of this one.

I’m pretty sure it’s part of the Sunrise Series inspired by the tsunami that devastated Indonesia in 2004. As Tina watched the colours of the sunrise that followed the aftermath of the devastation, the Sunrise series was born- a symbol of a new day and new beginnings in the face of hardship. This is another of Tina’s where I’m transported to Summer days. I see crystal-clear lakes, the ocean, magical sunsets and mangoes! I feel the freshness and cleansing that happens from when you dive into the ocean or jump off a rock into a waterhole. Fond memories arise when I see this one- the magical ethereal essence heightens the appeal in my opinion.

This piece is signed, “Tina Cooper – 2005” in Tina’s distinctive hand- it’s feint (which is usual) and hard to read (… also usual)! Tina has been HAND-CREATING art-glass in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland since the late-1980’s. Her best work attracts serious collectors. This older piece is bound to increase in value in coming years as Tina goes onto greater heights.

This piece also has that (often elusive) “flow” that happens when someone is completely “lost” in what they’re doing. Tina transports us to this other place. A machine-made piece can not and will never do this.

Art-glass pumped out of Chinese factories in the thousands is cheap but rarely ignites any inspiration or passion- most ends up as landfill after a few years because when the trend has moved on the piece is basically worthless. If you believe artists jobs should be given to people and not machines, consider investing in hand-made art. There are very few better ways to invest in your home, reduce your carbon footprint and create stories to be passed from this generation to the next. Tina Cooper’s work has been telling stories for over 30 years now and has etched a permanent place in the history of Australian art glass.
