Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2012)

A vintage ceramic Baldelli Coin Bank made in Italy in 1960’s measuring 26cm long. These are extremely rare- a lot rarer than Bitossi animals. Baldelli started in 1943 and reached its heyday in the 1970’s when they were supplying American Department stores. Apparently for a few years Baldelli coin banks were given out by an American bank when people opened a new account with them- beats the Commonwealth Bank tin and that plastic pig Australian banks gave out! (Another example of how scabby our banks are!) Baldelli also made a ceramic elephant, cat and some weird zebra that looks like a cat with stripes on.

Because vintage pottery animals are so popular I’ve wanted to stock a Baldelli one for some time. After exhaustive searching for over 18 months this is the first one I’ve got (it came from America). It’s a cool practical piece with all the fun of Lisa Larson animals but Baldelli animals are bigger and have a practical use as well. This piece has survived over 40 years, it’s well MARKED TO THE BASE (Baldelli Italy) and made by a family Italian business (HAND-PAINTED too)- there are few better ways to invest in your home and in our environment… And the blue colour is extremely RARE (most of the Baldelli animal coin banks are yellow).
