Background Info and Provenance

A vintage Bitossi bull made in Italy in the late 1950’s or 1960’s. He measures 34cm in length which makes him large enough to stand proudly on his own on a sideboard and not look swamped. The bold stance gives him an extra air of authority. The bull is the quintessential Bitossi piece and the hardest to get- this is the third one I’ve had (in 20 years of being in this business). VINTAGE Bitossi pieces were all done by hand- the incisions on the outside, the paint decoration and moulding have been done by the hands of an artist making every Bitossi piece individualistic. The new re-issues are little more than replicas. The re-issues are NOT made by hand- NONE of it- which gives the new ones virtually no collector appeal. (I’m not entirely convinced the re-issues were even made in Italy- in this day and age, just because something has Made In Italy printed on it doesn’t mean it is. (Many new pieces labelled with “”Murano” these days are NOT made in Murano, the island in Italy, but China instead.)

Designed by Aldo Londi and created by the world-famous Italian firm Bitossi, these animals captured the attention of the world and cemented Bitossi’s already world-wide reputation. To my knowledge, Bitossi pieces were never retailed in Australia back in the 1960’s- they’re incredibly rare here and much-loved by Australian collectors. Bitossi animals in Australia are about 20 times rarer than America. This piece is also marked on the foot, Italy, with the design number. (A common- AUTHENTIC- marking for an early original.) Many vintage Bitossi animals AREN’T marked- this gives this Bitossi piece very strong investment value. It’s DEFINITELY a vintage original and NOT a modern re-issue- many aspects of the piece confirm this. (Call me if you want to discuss why. The most obvious sign he’s vintage are the many tooling marks you see on this one which proves he’s been HAND-worked.)

Bitossi bulls are currently fetching AUD $900-$1200 in Australia (a friend of mine with a shop in Sydney sells vintage Bitossi bulls for UD $1100 if he ever gets one these days … but he hasn’t had one for 5 years now!)

The real beauty of owning Bitossi pottery is knowing it won’t be in vogue for just a season or even a couple of years before ending up as landfill. This stunning Bitossi bull, CREATED BY HAND, has survived about 70 years and today is more popular than ever. This piece may just outlive all of us! There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
