Background Info and Provenance

A vintage Bitossi horse-thing made in Italy in the late 1950’s or 1960’s. I’m not really sure what this one is supposed to be which is why I like it so much! In the past I’ve called him a “mythical creature”- the top part looks like drawings I’ve seen of the Loch Ness Monster (!)- the imagination takes you on a ride for this one. This is a good-sized Bitossi piece too.

I’ve recently read online that the ITALY stamp on Bitossi creatures denotes that the particular piece is of second-quality. I can’t see how this can be true- most of these “mythological creatures” have the ITALY stamp on them like this. (Some have the design number also included in the stamp- others have no design number included at all and there are others like this one that have the design number painted on in black paint- under the glaze- with the ITALY stamp as well). I believe this ITALY stamping was used later by Bitossi  (but still in the 1960’s) and that the piece on offer in this listing was the transition between when most Bitossi creatures had ITALY painted on in black on the underside and then when ITALY stamp became their more common marking. I’ve not seen the ITALY stamp on many Bitossi pieces though. For example I’ve NEVER seen an ITALY stamp on a Bitossi bull (but most of these “horse-things” do have the ITALY stamp). It makes absolutely no sense for no Bitossi bulls to ever be of second-quality and virtually all these “horse-things” to be of second-quality. For this reason and plain common-sense I believe that statement has to be false.

VINTAGE Bitossi pieces (like this one) were all done by hand- the incisions on the outside, the paint decoration and moulding have been done by the hands of an artist making every Bitossi piece individualistic. The new re-issues are little more than replicas. The re-issues are NOT made by hand- NONE of it- which gives the new ones virtually no collector appeal. (I’m not entirely convinced the re-issues were even made in Italy- in this day and age, just because something has Made In Italy printed on it doesn’t mean it is. (Many new pieces labelled with “”Murano” these days are NOT made in Murano, the island in Italy, but China instead.)

Designed by Aldo Londi and created by the world-famous Italian firm Bitossi, these animals captured the attention of the world and cemented Bitossi’s already world-wide reputation. To my knowledge, Bitossi pieces were never retailed in Australia back in the 1960’s- they’re incredibly rare here and much-loved by Australian collectors. Bitossi animals in Australia are about 20 times rarer than America. Many vintage Bitossi animals AREN’T marked at all- the marking on the underside of this one gives this Bitossi piece very strong investment value. It’s DEFINITELY a vintage original and NOT a modern re-issue- this “horse-thing” design was never picked up as a re-issue. As of 2022, ALL in this design are VINTAGE (c. 1960’s).

Bitossi creatures are currently fetching anything up to AUD $3000 each on 1stdibs- one of these horse-things on 1stdibs is currently on sale with 20% off and is still priced at over AUD $1400- almost 4 times the price ours. The investment appeal on offer here is obvious- Bitossi pottery are obvious investment pieces too. Over the 20 years I’ve been in this business I’ve witnessed first-hand how Bitossi creatures have constantly increased in value. The last one in this design that iNVISeDGE had was back in 2014 when we sold one for $265 AUD. I went through our records and also found one I sold in 2010 for $185 AUD – wish I’d hung onto that one or any Bitossi creature I’ve sold in the past. The bulls are selling for 2 to 2.5 times more than what they were selling for back in 2013. This trend is only set to continue- Bitossi pieces are getting harder and harder to find and with the re-issues around it has only made the authentic vintage ones (made by HAND) even more special.

The real beauty of owning Bitossi pottery is knowing it won’t be in vogue for just a season or even a couple of years before ending up as landfill. This stunning Bitossi creature, CREATED BY HAND, has survived about 60 years and today is more popular than ever. This piece may just outlive all of us! There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
