Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2014)

A VINTAGE Gli Etruschi cat made in Italy in the late 1950’s or early 60’s. This comes out of my own collection and is not easy to part with. I love the circular movement- its flowing essence- and the eclectic mix of chic designer and rustic in one piece. It has a captivating and unique style.

This piece has a partial Rosenthal Netter label which dates it to the 1950’s and 1960’s. Rosenthal Netter was a retail heavyweight that imported designer pieces into America during the mid-section of last century. This piece also has the black painted base commonly seen on Gli Etruschi’s work.

This is a genuine vintage piece made by hand. New pieces are essentially plaster poured into a mould (a machine could do it and does). They don’t have the hand-made quality of vintage pieces such as this.

Gli Etruschi earned much acclaim in the 1950’s and 60’s and these days his pieces tend to fetch more than Bitossi’s. Gli Etruschi pottery is much harder to find compared to Bitossi and sits on its own as far as style is concerned. There’s nothing around that matches it. I’ve seen many amazing designs by Gli Etruschi and this is why dealers hold his work in such high esteem.

The real beauty of owning vintage Italian pottery is knowing it won’t be in vogue for a season or even a couple of years before ending up as landfill. The hand-made quality of these pieces draws people in- the heart and soul that comes through will continue to speak to people regardless of their age, background and the era. This piece has survived about 50 years and is more popular than ever. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
