Description

This chair AND FOOTSTOOL SOLD in 2008 through iNVISeDGE for $1295 (chair WITH the footstool). Today in 2019 I’d price the exact same ensemble at around $1695.

In the description below I wrote that I believed this chair was made in Australia. This description was written back at the time I sold this chair. Today in 2019 I’m pretty certain it’s not an Australian chair. A few years ago I thought it might have been made by SoDa Galvano of Norway but these days I don’t think so. Now I believe it was done in Europe in the late-1960’s- it appeared 70’s to me back in 2008 but fabric trends permeated Australia quite some years after Europe back at this time so it was more likely to be a late 60’s chair. I should have taken photos of this chair before it was re-upholstered. These days if I got the exact same piece again that also needed re-upholstery and if I took photos PRIOR to recovering (showing the vintage fabric and the construction quality underneath) I’d price it at more than $1695- this figure would then become very conservative for a quality vintage piece of this calibre.

Background Info and Provenance

This description was written back in 2008! Some of the information below is NOT accurate! It has sold so I’m not writing it again.

A stunning VINTAGE feature chair in the style of the much-celebrated “Egg Chair” by Arne Jacobsen in 1965. This particular piece mimics the design of the Egg Chair and I believe was made in the 1970’s. We have just organised professional re-upholstery of this chair in a high-quality wool fabric- the original fabric was bad-70’s and had to go! The most important thing about this chair is its vintage. It has already lasted for about 40 years and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t last another 50, probably 100 years! Structurally it’s like new. This chair has a moulded FIBREGLASS shell- the structure is therefore strong and durable- it’s almost impossible to break. Incredibly a lot of Egg Replica chairs currently swarming the market are made from Polystyrene Foam. I can’t stomach the fact that natural resources are used to make things that will end up as landfill or in our oceans in a matter of 5-10 years- not to mention the factory emissions and fossil fuel emissions needed to transport this crap around the world.

This chair was most likely made in Australia in the early 70’s (by whom I don’t know as I’ve never come across another exactly the same). We have employed an Australian to expertly reupholster this piece (and paid him properly!) and sourced the fabric from a fabric retailer here in Australia- the retail value of the wool fabric alone on this chair is $500! The other thing this chair boasts is investment appeal- when you look at the chair it becomes obvious it’s an authentic vintage piece. You won’t see the exact same one in anyone else’s lounge room and the piece should retain its value over time as you get to enjoy it (maybe even appreciate slightly). Why spend $1000+ on one of those deplorable egg-type things? It will lose its value by around $600 the second you walk it out the door! (I saw a second-hand Egg Replica chair 2 years ago with the base totally broken off!)

…Oh and I almost forgot- this chair is super comfortable- totally luxury to sit in! PPS. It’s also great to have the matching footstool- brilliant to lie out in. (The matching footstool IS included in this price.)
