ALL 4 CHAIRS SOLD QUICKLY for $695 EACH (in 2021). Regularly click into our NEWLY LISTED Section or follow us on Instagram!
Price is PER CHAIR- $695 EACH. This listing price is for ONE Tessa T8 FULL-GRAIN leather chair. We have FOUR matching chairs, a matching Tessa T8 coffee table, plus a T8 lounger all priced SEPARATELY. These are amazing chairs because they can also be pushed together to form a modular sofa. I LOVE the look of T8s without armrests but the modular-type possibility is a very cool look too and so practical. This is another suite I’d have in my home in a second and … again … AUSTRALIAN-MADE (back in the early-1980’s).
This furniture is being SOLD UNDER CONSIGNMENT by a private seller in ADELAIDE but these pieces can be sent by furniture freight Australia-wide for a reasonable additional price. (Approx. $200 to get 2 armless chairs to MELBOURNE.)
ALL THIS FURNITURE WAS PURCHASED IN ADELAIDE IN 1982 in a department store (the name of which has now escaped me!). I think it’s a store that’s now defunct… (like most Australian small businesses)… I like the colours of this rare suite too- these colours promote a minimalist Scandinavian look. This design looks great in chocolate leather with walnut frames but I like this suite a little more (the cognac / tan-type colour leather is beaut and I personally prefer lighter-coloured timber too). The other interesting thing I got from the conversation I had with these sellers is that they had to wait about 6 MONTHS for Tessa to make this furniture back in the early-1980’s. (I have now heard this a LOT from people who bought their furniture 40 and 50 years ago … and some people complain to me when they’re items have taken 4 weeks to get them with TWO BORDER CLOSURES (because of COVID) … how times and some people have changed.)
Background Info and Provenance
(Written in 2021)
Fred Lowen designed the T8 range of lounge furniture for Tessa in 1976- based on the Norwegian designs of the 1960’s and 70’s, with gorgeous minimalist curves, and rich FULL-GRAIN leather. These chairs are over 40 years old and are just incredible! No guessing the quality on offer here (especially the leather). These pieces present brilliantly despite over 40 years of use!
These chairs were made for comfort- great angles, great support, great height in the back and a nice amount of plushness. This leaves durability and investment appeal. Research Tessa Furniture on-line for a few minutes and you’ll see that Tessa developed its formidable reputation because of top-quality construction. As to the investment appeal of these chairs, VINTAGE Tessa full-grain leather suites are becoming highly contested- prices are continuing to rise due to the recent demand for quality, long-lasting, COMFORTABLE and super-stylish furniture during COVID-lockdowns.
After a 50-year stint in the Australian Marketplace, making virtually ALL their furniture in AUSTRALIA, Tessa Furniture closed their doors in 2019. It’s a sorry state of affairs when an Australian business can no longer do what they do so well because of cheap imports destined to end up as landfill. And this is the very reason why Tessa eventually died. Their designs are so well-made that vintage second-hand Tessa pieces (like these 40-year-old chairs) ended up becoming more sought-after than new Tessa Furniture. And who can blame people going straight to the second-hand market for designs such as this? The QUALITY of this design is so exceptional that second-hand Tessa chairs (in quality upholstery / leather) often look close to new after 20, 30, 40- even 50 years of use.
This is FULL-GRAIN vintage leather ie. the real deal. After the mid-1990’s until they closed in 2019, Tessa sometimes used inferior TOP-GRAIN leather. Top-Grain leather is NOT TOP-GRADE leather- it’s 2ND-GRADE leather, the inferior THIN modern-day stuff that usually deteriorates within 20 years of use (much of today’s leather furniture is Top-Grain).
A leather clean and condition was all that was needed here- now this suite is looking fantastic and ready to be used and loved for another 40 years!
After much of the world’s furniture ends up as landfill, these chairs will be passed onto the next generation. This is why we do what we do- our goal is to provide options for buyers wanting to make a positive impact with every purchasing decision. ALL VINTAGE Tessa pieces are sustainable, they make a positive economic impact, there’s very little environmental impact when you invest in any quality vintage piece PLUS these chairs were MADE IN AUSTRALIA. (After around 2010 several Tessa designs were made in China).
