Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2020)

A vintage 1950’s Wormser Terra-Sigillata pottery pitcher. This is the most exquisite West German pottery piece I’ve had in over 20 years. Such a stylish shape, it’s the epitome of elegance. This piece is one of the cheapest in the group photos (by far), yet to me it’s the one that makes the blue/green ensemble “pop”. With this group, I aimed to create a feeling of elegance and refined sophistication but that’s not easy when you’re putting 4 things into a small space (because sometimes less really is more). To me this piece makes the group what it is because it provides a contrast. The glass pieces are all luminous and almost have an ethereal quality. This pottery piece is opaque and black. Black is the complete opposite of ethereal but it’s so graceful in shape and “flow”, you could apply the word ethereal to this one as well. This piece ties the group together and takes the sophisticated style of the group to a new level- I took a few photos without this piece in and it just wasn’t the same. It makes the luminous quality of the glass pieces more pronounced so it actually props up the glass (even though it’s MUCH cheaper than virtually all of those glass pieces).

Wormser Terra-Sigillata Art Pottery is RARE- I’ve had this one for 17 years now and have never seen another Wormser Terra-Sigillata pitcher like this for sale in all those years (in person or online). I love the labelling under the vase. The “Made in West Germany” paper label is OLD. I’d say this is a 1950’s piece and came out well BEFORE West German pottery reached its heyday.

This a fascinating piece of history and has been expertly made; back in the day when craftsmanship mattered. Try finding another of these for sale! Most modern décor pieces are destined to end up as landfill quickly; they’re mass-produced using CHEAP chemical compounds and resins, these pieces have NO life-energy in them and hold very little value (if any). Once they’re chipped, even the charity shops refuse to take them; they end up as landfill as quickly as the trend has passed. This piece has been passed on from generation to generation (it’s about 70 years old!) and with each passing of hands it stands above the rest even more. Investing in quality HAND-CRAFTED VINTAGE pieces is a smart way to go- collectable vintage pieces INCREASE in value over time so they won’t ever end up as landfill (thus reducing your carbon footprint). This piece would make an exquisite gift for that discerning friend.
