This suite SOLD UNDER CONSIGNMENT from our seller’s home in New Farm, BRISBANE. I personally photographed this pair- I’ve inspected and “road-tested” these chairs out personally.
Background Info and Provenance
A Yuzuru Yamakawa designer rattan chair. (Our listed price is for ONE chair only.) These are some of the most architecturally stunning chairs I’ve ever seen. They’re imposing but at the same time they have a sculptural refined elegance similar to that seen in Danish furniture. I can picture these chairs in a variety of amazing spaces so had to have them for my store. Flowing, graceful, earthy and natural- these chairs will be the hero of your space but will not completely overpower it. With an emphasis on ergonomics they’re also perfect for your afternoon siesta- the design is extraordinarily comfortable to settle back in.
Yuzuru has designed and worked with rattan for over 40 years. Loved by Japanese and international markets alike, EVERY one of his designs has stood the test of time. Yamakawa studied at the Kuwasawa Design College at night whilst expanding his family’s furniture company. In 1954, he was winner of the Governor of Tokyo Prize. In 1957, he won gold at the Milan Triennale Fair. One of his designs was also selected for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (New York) in 1964.
This particular pair of chairs was purchased by a Brisbane architect in the early-1980’s for his own home. I’ve never seen this design in Australia before- it’s likely this architect imported the chairs into Australia independently (ie. they were not purchased in a retail situation). I doubt you’ll come across another pair here again … particularly at this price!
Rattan grows at a very fast pace. It can only be found in rainforests because it needs trees to wrap around to reach sunlight. This means that as long as there are trees in the rainforest, rattan will always be a sustainable raw material. Rattan is one of the most intelligent materials to use in furniture construction (if not THE MOST intelligent). It’s extraordinarily resilient and durable- I’ve never seen rattan chairs like this with any structural issue ever but what’s even better about rattan is that it can’t dent or scratch. Only the surface finish can wear over time but that’s an easy fix. The best thing about rattan is that it can be bent into incredible shapes creating curves and arcs in a SOLID natural material. These chairs are earthy but have a designer-look (similar to the premise of Pretzel Lounge Chairs by Paul Frankl). That’s a rare combination these days. Most designer furniture is sterile and clinical-looking having been made from steel, glass and plastic. These designer chairs are warm and inviting in looks.
This pair also has extremely SOLID investment appeal. There’s currently ONE chair with one footstool for sale on 1stdibs for AU$3271. Having a pair available at the same time makes this a very rare opportunity. The cheapest chair with footstool I could find on a worldwide platform was 1750 euro ($3198 AU). See the screenshots provided. I have never come across another of these for sale in Australia ever.
This suite ticks every box especially the comfort box. Extraordinarily comfortable to lie back in, I have no doubt you could fall asleep in one of these chairs. I didn’t try though- I photographed them on a footpath outside our vendor’s home to get the best lighting for photography- it might have looked a bit odd sleeping in one of these chairs out on the street! These are relaxation chairs to rest back in- they’d be amazing beside the pool (undercover though! -a little moisture every now and then though won’t kill them). On a protected porch they’d be perfect or in front of that huge bay-window overlooking the water they’d create an inspiring look. They have a coastal style with a creative flow that’s rarely seen.
These chairs are already well OVER 30 years old– the quality of the design and construction materials have been proven before you shell out even a cent. The investment appeal is also a no-brainer. There’s no way this pair could be produced and imported new into Australia at anywhere near this price. Import charges might well be close to this! I have little or no doubt this pair will increase in value in the future PLUS they’ll get passed onto yet another generation after you’ve finished loving them. I can’t think of any better way to invest in your home, reduce landfill and invest in the future of our planet. Plus, by buying from iNVISeDGE you’re supporting a small Australian business who employs only local people. It’s a win – win – win!
